Landscape with a Woman
In the nineteenth century, gardening became a popular pastime. Parisians traveled by train to country houses or seaside resorts, spending time in their own gardens. There they conversed, reflected in solitude, sewed, read, or enjoyed gardening as leisure. Augusste Renoir captured such moments of daily life, sketching lightly in pencil and then applying quick washes of translucent watercolor, as if taking a snapshot.
