Maurice Utrillo, the son of the artist Suzanne Valadon, began painting in the early twentieth century and held his first solo exhibition in 1913. This work depicts a street in Montmartre, near the Bateau-Lavoir studio where Pablo Picasso, Kees van Dongen, and other artists of the time worked. The restrained palette and gray sky create a quiet, somber atmosphere. Only a few small, indistinct figures appear on the sidewalk at left, emphasizing the overall stillness of the nearly deserted scene.
