Alfred Sisley was known for painting outdoors even in bad weather. He was fascinated by the effects of changing seasons and weather, especially scenes of snow. For the last twenty years of his life, he lived in Moret-sur-Loing, a village southwest of Paris, and this painting shows a street near his home. Using a subtle palette of cool blues, grays, and dusty yellows, Sisley conveyed the distinctive atmosphere of winter.
