In the 1890s, Camille Pissarro turned his attention to scenes of modern urban life in Paris. He completed a series of fourteen paintings of the city’s grand boulevards, created during the mid-nineteenth-century redevelopment of Paris, capturing their appearance at different times of day and in varying weather. This canvas depicts the cool light of a winter morning, with bare street trees framing the scene. Carriages and pedestrians already busy on the road bring vitality to the quiet city.
