Born in Paris, Paul Signac spent his winters in the city and traveled during the warmer months. In this work, he painted the Pont Royal and the Gare d’Orsay as seen from the Right Bank of the Seine near the Louvre. Autumn colored trees are reflected in a pool of water in the foreground, revealing touches of the season’s hues. The white steam from a tugboat spreads across the bridge and the purple sky, left unpainted so that the paper itself conveys the effect.
