Paul Signac, an avid sailor, often painted sailboats like those moored here in the harbor of Le Pouliguen, a small town on France’s Atlantic coast that became a fashionable resort in the mid-nineteenth century. Above the masts, the spire of a Gothic church rises sharply into the sky, while the brightly colored sails—red, yellow, blue, and green—cast vivid reflections across the water.
