Late in his career, Paul Signac began painting still lifes, inspired by the work of Paul Cézanne. This picture was painted in Antibes, a coastal town in southern France, and the lemon and peppers on the tray evoke the atmosphere of the Mediterranean. The bright, vivid colors also reflect the spirit of the region. With angular brushstrokes, Signac combined Cézanne’s blocklike handling of paint with the color division he had developed earlier in his Pointillist work.
