The Port de Bougie, Algeria, in Sunlight
After first visiting Algeria in 1920, Albert Marquet returned for many winters, capturing the harbor views of what was then French colonial Algeria (today Béjaïa). From a terrace he set up his easel to paint the sea stretching beyond the warehouse roofs and toward the mountain range under the strong North African sun. With smooth brushstrokes and clearly defined forms, Marquet employed a restrained palette of red, blue, black, white, gray, and tan to evoke a calm and quiet atmosphere.
