From 1910 to 1936, Pierre Bonnard lived in a small house on the banks of the Seine near Vernon, northwest of Paris. During World War I, this place offered him comfort and renewed creative energy. He enjoyed boating on the river and often visited with neighboring artists, including Claude Monet and Edouard Vuillard. In this painting, the reflections of lush trees, flowing water, and drifting plants merge in tones of green and blue, drawing the eye toward the yellow and red house at the center.
