In 1888, Vincent van Gogh left Paris after two years and traveled to the south of France. This painting is among the first series he created in Arles. He closely observed the distinctive old, twisted trees in bloom and immersed himself in capturing the vivid colors under the intense southern sun, using expressive brushstrokes that laid bare his personal style. The long-handled scythe and rake leaning casually against a tree suggest the presence of people nearby.
