Henri-Edmond Cross continued to work extensively in watercolor, a medium he likely favored for its ability to achieve brilliant color compositions more quickly than the laborious process of oil painting. In this work, most of the composition is filled with a dark night sky illuminated by sparkling yellow stars, recalling the art of Vincent van Gogh. Along the horizon below, Cross used deep teal to suggest an expanse of land and the faint silhouettes of distant trees.
