Sergeant of the Colonial Regiment
Albert Marquet, together with Henri Matisse, André Derain, and Maurice de Vlaminck, was among the artists who launched Fauvism. In this work, he depicts a stern-faced soldier with a mustache. Based on the title, the figure represents a member of the French colonial forces at a time when France was expanding into Southeast Asia, the West Indies, and North Africa. The gleaming brass buttons, golden epaulets, and red-and-gold banding stand out against the dark blue uniform, demonstrating the vivid palette characteristic of the Fauves.
