Edouard Vuillard produced many interior portraits, often depicting friends, family members, or figures of the bourgeoisie. The woman here wears a red blouse with puffed sleeves and a long blue skirt, fashions popular in the 1890s. Behind her, a shelf holds various works, with picture frames casually propped on the upper tier. The background, filled with rectangular forms of frames, shelves, and the rungs of a ladder, creates a geometric rhythm within the composition.
