Edouard Vuillard painted his mother at the dining table using an unusual horizontal format and oblique perspective. The oval table, covered with a white tablecloth, is set for lunch with sparkling glassware, a bottle of red wine, patterned dishes, a floral arrangement, and a book. Mme Vuillard herself is integrated into the composition as one of the elements at the table. The green and yellow tones of the background enhance the sense of a real domestic setting.
